“Why spoil a good thing with a sequel?” a common phrase used by film lovers, are they right or are all sequels just as good as the first film or even better.

“Why spoil a good thing with a sequel?” is a common phrase used by film lovers, are they right or are all sequels just as good as the first film or even better?

Today's noticeable trend in the film industry is the continuous remakes of old movies or sequels to old movies but very few new original films taking centre stage. A good example is the Spider-Man movies, now at the third sequel the franchise has built its success on the love fans had for the original Spider-Man concept and spiced it up a little. So many other movies have leaned on this same strategy like the Fast and Furious franchise which is going on its 10th instalment, John Wick is on the 4th movie and James Bond is promising a new actor to be the next Agent 007 after the last one was killed off, even the veteran movies like expendables, Rambo, Transporter, Maverick, Creed, Jumanji the list could go on and on. The beauty about sequels is we never have to say goodbye to our favourite characters completely

In other sequels, film creators are merging two iconic movies to create a sequel. We’ve seen this with the Godzilla and Kong movies both highly successful films bringing the fans together to watch the two kings on one screen. A franchise, with another film Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire which made $519.4 million at the box office with great reviews, "The movie is yet another triumph for the franchise."

Bringing back beloved characters and storylines has created a thrilling culture of nostalgia in film, allowing fans to relive their favourites.

We can’t help but miss the one-hit films like the Titanic, films that had only one part and that was it there is something beautiful about a movie that hits the cord once. The Titanic wouldn’t be as impactful if it had a sequel, same with films like “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” or beautiful movies like “ A Walk to Remember”

Do we need all these sequels or should we let our imagination run free?
