Lunagula Annet, a Ugandan film director, writer, and actor, combines passion and resilience to create impactful stories centered on African morals and culture.
Meet Lunagula Annet, a multi-talented film director, writer, and actor from Kamuli District, Eastern Uganda, now based in Nansana, Wakiso District. Since her debut in the film industry in 2019, Lunagula has built a reputation as a creative powerhouse, contributing to the industry with her talent and dedication.
Her journey began in her Form 6 vacation, with roles in "The Only Bridge" and "The Potter’s Hand," both of which received nominations at the Uganda Film Festival (UFF) 2019 and international festivals. Although her initial love was acting, Lunagula soon discovered her passion for writing and directing, roles she now holds dear.
Over the years, she has taken on multiple responsibilities, including script supervision, acting, and assistant directing in projects such as "The Lions of Buganda" and "Tales of Our Times". Both projects have won awards at local and international levels. Another milestone in her career was "Mum Vs Wife," a show on Pearl Magic that aired for three months. As a casting director and assistant director, Lunagula gained invaluable experience and interacted with numerous professionals in the field.
Her proudest achievement is the 2023 film "My Sister’s Blood," which she wrote and co-produced. This project marked her first screenplay to be brought to life and earned nominations in Nigeria and India. Working with collaborators like Nakibinge Swaibu, Retty Bitannah, Kimbowa Derrick Alexander, and Nayebale Catherine, Lunagula successfully brought this powerful story to the screen. The process gave her a comprehensive understanding of filmmaking, from writing to post-production.
Another project close to her heart is "The Lions of Buganda," where she assisted in directing a massive cast of over 400 actors. This cultural project not only provided her with an incredible learning experience but also deepened her appreciation for Baganda traditions, a significant achievement for someone originally from the Basoga community.
Like many filmmakers, Lunagula has faced challenges, with financing her projects being the most significant. However, she has overcome these hurdles by collaborating with other talented filmmakers, ensuring her visions come to life.
Lunagula’s work focuses on African morals, ensuring her projects have a positive impact on the continent’s creativity and resilience. She believes storytelling plays a critical role in placing Africa on the global stage, with its unique narratives offering a deeper understanding of the continent’s cultures and values.
Her greatest inspiration is herself. From a young age, Lunagula knew she wanted to be part of the media industry, and her determination has earned her recognition both locally and internationally. To aspiring filmmakers, her advice is: “It’s all about passion, consistency, focus, and energy. If you know what you want, nothing will stop you from achieving it.”
Looking ahead, Lunagula plans to release new projects in early 2025 and collaborate with international filmmakers to elevate Uganda’s film industry. She is optimistic about the future of African cinema, which she sees as growing brighter every day with the emergence of new talent and innovations.
When she’s not creating films, Lunagula is known for her funny quirks. She cries easily when hurt but is also talkative and polite, traits that reflect her warm personality.
