Kimbowa Derrick Alexander: A Filmmaker Redefining African Narratives

By Nalule Halimah

Kimbowa Derrick Alexander, a passionate Ugandan film director, uses his creativity and determination to tell compelling African stories that inspire, educate, and challenge stereotypes.

Kimbowa Derrick Alexander, a dedicated film director from Uganda, began his journey into the world of filmmaking during the 2020 lockdown. Although he had always harbored a desire to join the film industry, he struggled to find a way in until he turned to writing, with guidance from friends. His first steps as a writer led to the creation of several short films, though not all have yet reached the screen. Undeterred, Derrick took the leap into directing, starting with a film he shot using a phone. To date, he has directed three short films and gained recognition both locally and internationally.

One of Derrick’s standout projects is "My Sister's Blood." This film delves into the important themes of widow inheritance and early marriages in traditional African society. What makes this project even more remarkable is the way it came together—it began as a WhatsApp group of strangers who pooled resources to bring their vision to life. The film won recognition in India and was nominated in Nigeria, showcasing the team’s creativity and resilience to the world.

Derrick’s love for creativity, collaboration, and the thrill of storytelling drives his work in the film industry. Despite facing challenges such as time and budget constraints, he has mastered the art of teamwork and effective communication, ensuring that everyone involved in his projects is aligned with the same goals.

Through his films, Derrick contributes to showcasing Africa’s creativity, resilience, and potential by telling authentic and compelling stories that reflect the richness of African cultures. His work seeks to challenge stereotypes and highlight the continent’s vibrant creativity and innovative spirit. Derrick hopes his films inspire a deeper appreciation for Africa’s immense potential and shift the global narrative from one of deficit to abundance and possibility.

His greatest inspiration is Kevin Johns Nabukenya, a fellow creative whose remarkable achievements within four years motivate Derrick to work even harder. For those aspiring to join the film industry, Derrick’s advice is clear: “Never give up on your goals. Keep your head high and stay focused.”

Derrick’s vision for the future includes producing inspiring and educative films that uphold African values. He firmly believes that the film industry has a bright future, with storytelling serving as a tool for education, inspiration, and the promotion of African culture.

When he’s not behind the camera, Derrick reveals that he can be a bit talkative—but only around people he knows well!
