Kaweesi Shakib: From Passionate Actor to Visionary Film Director

By Nalule Halimah

Kaweesi Shakib, a Ugandan film director and founder of ANCHO Entertainment Film Production, is driven by a passion for storytelling and a vision to showcase Africa’s creativity to the world.

Kaweesi Shakib, a passionate film director from Uganda, began his journey in the film industry in 2016 with a dream of becoming an actor. As his passion grew, he shifted his focus to film directing and earned his Film Directing Certificate in 2024. In 2022, Kaweesi brought his vision to life by founding ANCHO Entertainment Film Production and ANCHO Media, located in Munyonyo, Makindye Division, Kampala City.

While many people find satisfaction in front of the camera, Kaweesi feels most at home behind the camera as a director and producer. He strongly believes that his work contributes to showcasing Africa’s creativity, resilience, and potential by telling inspirational stories that teach, motivate, and encourage those who feel that achieving greatness is impossible.

Among his works, Kaweesi is particularly proud of his first film, "JOY". It was a difficult project that tested him mentally and physically as he worked with actors and handled logistics. Despite the challenges, he pushed through, showcasing his commitment to completing a story worth telling.

Kaweesi is also no stranger to the difficulties of filmmaking in Uganda. He highlights the struggle of creating a project with a great story but lacking financial support to bring it to life. Oftentimes, directors are forced to improvise and compromise just to ensure the film gets completed. Despite not yet receiving major awards, Kaweesi remains confident that his dedication and blessings will lead to success.

His greatest inspiration comes from achievers in the global film industry who have turned their passion into art. Kaweesi’s ultimate goal is to build ANCHO Entertainment Film Production into a household name, both countrywide and internationally. He dreams of producing inspirational and educational movies that resonate with audiences and elevate him to greater heights.

To aspiring filmmakers, Kaweesi advises:
"You must have passion, love for the industry, and clarity about what you want to achieve. When you know your purpose and are committed to it, everything will fall into place."

Looking ahead, Kaweesi believes Uganda’s film industry is promising and on the rise. The progress being made reflects a bright future, and he is committed to playing a part in moving the industry forward.
