Driven by passion, resilience, and a love for storytelling, Mwebaza Memory Ajay uses his films to inspire, educate, and unite audiences while showcasing the beauty of Africa.
Meet Mwebaza Memory Ajay, a multifaceted Ugandan writer, director, and actor from Kagoma, Maganjo in Wakiso District. His journey into the film industry began in 2017 during his secondary school days at Sam Iga Memorial, where he joined the Bearwood Productions local filming school. Since then, Memory has carved a niche for himself as a storyteller with a passion for directing, training talent, developing stories, and editing scripts.
Over the years, Memory has received numerous awards from the Uganda Film Festival, with one of his standout projects being "Kitara Chronicles". This film not only earned him three awards in the 2023 festival, including the People’s Viewer’s Choice, but also pushed him to make significant sacrifices. To create this masterpiece, Memory left the city and immersed himself in a remote village, overcoming challenges such as language barriers and misunderstandings with locals. Despite these hurdles, the film’s success stands as a testament to his dedication and perseverance.
Another project that holds a special place in his heart is "Ndolombe," which showcases his ability to weave compelling narratives and deliver impactful stories. His work, which includes adventure films like "The Incredible Seven" and "Kitara Chronicles," has also contributed to improving Africa’s tourism industry by showcasing the continent’s breathtaking landscapes and rich cultural heritage. Through his films, Memory provides employment opportunities, inspires fellow Africans, and promotes unity by highlighting the continent’s untold stories.
Memory’s challenges in the industry include lack of funding, difficulty in accessing locations, and limited markets for African films. As a producer, he’s tackled these issues by employing skilled set designers to build custom locations and forging connections with buyers and executive producers. These efforts ensure his projects are not only completed but resonate with audiences on a profound level.
Inspired by the Hollywood family, Memory strives to elevate Uganda’s film industry to global standards. His ultimate goal is to help Ugandan cinema reach the heights of international acclaim, believing that the future of the African film industry is more than bright.
To aspiring filmmakers, Memory advises: “Stay focused, believe in yourself, and never stop learning. Creativity is key, and research will take you far.” This mindset has driven his success and continues to fuel his ambition.
Beyond filmmaking, Memory reveals a personal side—while he is often described as jolly, his true happiness comes from directing and making movies. Once a set wraps, however, he admits to feeling a deep sense of sadness, underscoring his profound connection to the art of filmmaking.
Through his work, Memory emphasizes that storytelling has the power to educate, inspire, and promote unity, helping to develop African countries by bringing hidden truths and valuable information to light. His films continue to shine a spotlight on Africa’s potential, proving that the continent’s stories deserve a place on the global stage.
